£22m housing improvement scheme gets underway

The first phase has begun on multi-million pound improvements to thousands of homes across Salford.
Work is now underway to revamp almost 400 properties in Ordsall and Weaste following the transfer of 8,500 homes from Salford Council to Salix Homes.

Over the next two years 2,200 homes will undergo £22m of much needed improvements including new kitchens, bathrooms, windows and doors.

Contractor Emanuel Whittaker has started work on 230 properties on the Tootal Estate in Weaste, while building specialist A. Connolly Ltd has begun work on 166 homes in South Ordsall.

Mark Foster, head of investment at Salix Homes, said: “We promised our tenants that if we transferred we would be able to carry out the improvements to their homes that they so desperately need, so now we are delighted to be able to deliver on our promises and announce the start of our ambitious investment programme, so soon after transfer.

In March the properties formally transferred from Salford Council to Salix Homes after tenants voted in favour of the move.

Over the next five years, Salix Homes has promised to invest £75million to ensure that every property meets the Government’s Decent Homes standard by 2020.

John Gallagher, contracts director at Emanuel Whittaker, said: “We are very proud to be playing such a pivotal role in the regeneration of this area. Not only will this project improve the quality of life of residents who will benefit from modern, energy efficient homes, but it has also enabled us to create four new apprenticeship positions for local people.”

Simon Harrison, managing director at A. Connolly Ltd, added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Salix Homes to deliver the planned investment programme improvements on the South Ordsall estate.”

Work on the Tootal Estate and South Ordsall is expected to be completed this autumn, when the next phase of improvement work will begin.
