A man was stretchered away from a stabbing at a bar in Little Hulton.
Cyns Tavern, on the Little Hulton District Centre shopping precinct, was taped off, with customers not allowed to leave.
Police were called to the Manchester Road East bar shortly before 7pm on Thursday 28 January.
A 21-year-old man who was drinking in the pub suffered multiple stab injuries.
Some three hours later officers were still questioning witnesses.
Reports locally suggest that around 6.30pm on Thursday four masked men rushed into the bar and attacked the victim with bottles and knives.
Detectives are investigating whether it was a targeted attack.
Forensic Crime Scene Investigation teams were sweeping the area behind a police cordon to unpick exactly what happened.
The victim suffered multiple wounds and was taken to hospital.
His condition is not at this stage considered to be life-threatening.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said the circumstances and motivation behind the attack were still unclear.
He confirmed that detectives believed the man was set upon by more than one attacker.
No further people were reported injured.
The spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called to the scene at 6.45pm.
“A man was taken to hospital with a number of injuries which appear to be stab wounds.
“At this stage none are considered to be life threatening, or serious.”
