Sqaully winds and bouts of rain are to continue throughout Friday as the tail-end of Storm Gertrude hits Britain.
Gusts of up to 60mph are possible in Salford.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Greater Manchester.
A rapidly deepening after of low pressure is passing across northern Scotland, where a red weather warning – the highest level of alert – has been put in place.
North of the border gale-force winds of up to 90mph are expected.
Residents are being asked to be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions, as well as disruption to travel and power supplies.
Electricity North West says it has drafted in extra engineers should power supplies go down.
Severe weather may cause power outages due to fallen trees and flying debris damaging overhead power lines and making it difficult for engineers to climb.

Chris Fox, Systems Manager for Electricity North West, said: “We are closely monitoring the weather and we’ve taken extra measures to get ready in case severe weather hits our region.
“I want to reassure our customers that we are on hand and we’re doing everything we can to protect the network.

Salford council says that at the moment, river levels are back within normal limits.
Residents in flood-plain areas of Salford are nervous after the devastation of Boxing Day.
A spokesman for Salford City Council said: “We are working closely with the Environment Agency to monitor the river levels.
“Their advice is that river levels are back to their normal levels for this time of year, and are coping well with any current heavy rain.
“There are no alerts or warnings in place at the moment and Met Office advice is indicating that any heavy rain over the next few days will be across Cumbria and North East Lancashire.”

As of 11am this morning, Friday 29 January, monitoring stations in Salford were all showing levels below which flooding is possible.
The highest recorded level of the river at Adelphi Weir was a staggering 3.86m on Boxing Day 2015, when 400 homes were hit by rising floodwaters.
Today it sits at 0.66m.
