St Ambrose Barlow school closed as 2000 Swinton homes hit by overnight power cut

Almost 2,000 homes and businesses in the Wardley area of Swinton were hit by an overnight power cut.

In the early hours of Monday morning power supplies at 1,951 properties went offline.

The area affected was an entire estate north of Moorside station and the A6 Manchester Road, between Ash Drive and Mulgrave Street.

St Ambrose Barlow RC High School on Ash Drive remains closed this morning.

Parents and children have been informed.

The nearby Wardley CE Primary School, on Moss Bank Road, was not affected and is open as normal.

A spokesman for Electricity North West, who are responsible for power supplies in the area, said the power cut was due to an underground cable fault.

“At 12.06am on Monday 25 January 1,951 properties were affected. 1,366 of those were back online within 10 minutes.

“That’s our automatic backup service. The 585 other properties were had supplies restored within an hour.

“There was one property – St Ambrose Barlow RC High School which remained offline because engineers couldn’t gain access.

“The school’s power was restored at 8.34am on Monday 25 January.”

As of 9.27am a voicemail message at the school reception was still repeating that the school was closed.

“Due to a power failure the school is closed until further notice,” it said. “Check the school website for further details.”

A message on the school’s website reads: “We are closed until further notice due to power failure. Updates on social media and website. Hope to open later.”
