Update: 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder after body found in Salford University halls

A murder investigation has been launched after a man’s body was found in a Salford University hall of residence.

Police were called to Cannon Street, off Silk Street, at 1pm on Monday 8 February 2016.

Officers attended discovered the body of a 30-year-old man.

The body is believed to have been discovered in Bramall Court, a high rise block of flats.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

A University of Salford spokesman said, “We were informed this evening of the very sad news that a young man has been tragically found dead at halls in Cannon Street.

“This has come as a huge shock to us all and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

“The University is helping Greater Manchester Police with its investigation.”

Superintendent Mark Kenny, based at Swinton, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life and we are doing everything we can to found out exactly what happened.”

“We have now launched a murder investigation and a team of detectives will be speaking to witnesses over the coming hours and days.”

“As part of that I want to appeal to anyone who might have information that could help us – please come forward and speak to my officers.”

“I can’t speculate on the motive for this crime, but at this early stage there is nothing to suggest there is a threat to the wider student population.”

“We already have a strong working relationship with the university and we will be working closely with them in the coming days.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
