Hundreds of Salfordians have volunteered to give the city a right royal clean up.
The volunteers, including homeless men and women, Salford Angels Women’s Institute, local parks and railway station friends’ groups and schools have come forward to take part in Clean for the Queen.
The national initiative aims to tidy up Britain this weekend March 4-6 ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday in April.
Barry Matley from the Manchester City Mission/Quarterway daytime project, said that their night shelter guests jumped at the chance to volunteer when it was suggested.
“They’re really looking forward to it. Often homeless people don’t feel useful so this is something where they can give something back,” he said.
Around 12 of the guests will clean the area around the Windsor Centre and Lance Burn health centre in Churchill Way, moving on to Clarendon Park if time allows.
Other volunteers include the Friends of Green Grosvenor Park, Broughton who plan to clean up debris left in the park by the Boxing Day flood, the Friends of Patricroft station and local scout groups who are teaming up to spruce up the area around the station and staff from the Novotel Hotel, Worsley who plan to clean up a small wood near the hotel.
Councillor Gena Merrett, executive lead member for housing and environment, said: “It’s great to see so many people coming out to tidy up their local area. I hope people who are tempted to drop litter see all this hard work and do the right thing and dispose of their rubbish properly.”
