Little Hulton switches back to Netto after shock Morrisons closures

Scandanavian discount supermarket Netto is to open in a former Morrisons in Little Hulton next week.

The move has brought 20 new jobs to the local area.

Five years ago Morrisons bought out the 12,000 sq ft Armitage Avenue location from Netto.

Netto had stopped running outlets in 2010 when its UK arm was bought out by Asda in a £775 million deal.

And Morrisons in response snapped up the Little Hulton branch in May 2011.

But SalfordOnline.com revealed in September 2015 how Morrisons planned to close its Little Hulton branch – and its £10 million flagship Ordsall store – in the wake of dramatic losses.

Now Netto is returning to its former location.

It plans to open at 8am on Thursday 21 April.

Netto has opened 15 stores in the UK since November 2014 in a deal to return the discount retailer to the country’s high streets and out-of-town locations.

Sainsbury’s formed a deal with Netto’s parent company Dansk Supermarked, saying the Little Hulton branch would be “a complete departure from the format that left the UK market in 2010”.

Netto says it will sell a range of over 2,000 products and the store will include an in-house bakery producing Danish breads and pastries.

Morten Moberg Nielsen, Managing Director at Netto UK, comments: “We are excited to be opening a store in Little Hulton and to become part of the local community. We look forward to welcoming new customers and to bring a taste of Scandinavia to the area.

“At Netto, we think that everyone should be able to buy nice things, in a nice shop, at a nice price. People should come and have a look – I think they will be impressed.”

The grand opening on Thursday 21 April is offering free samples from Netto’s in-store bakery, live music from the Netto band, balloon modelling for the kids and a chance to meet Netto’s giant LEGO Scottie (the biggest LEGO dog in the world)
