Green Lane in Patricroft was blocked this morning after an Arriva bus drove into a low railway bridge.

Police were called to the scene at 7am today, Wednesday 27 May, after the bus careered into the 14ft bridge near Patricroft railway station.

The vehicle was driving from Monton towards Patricroft when it struck the bridge.

The impact ripped the front of the roof from the bus and smashed windows on the top deck.

Luckily the bus was out of service and had only the driver on board at the time.

Shocked drivers who witnessed the accident helped to clear broken glass and debris from the road.

The driver was not injured in the crash.

Northern Rail tweeted at 9am that delays and disruption on the line between Manchester and Newton-le-Willows and Wigan North Western through Patricroft station had ended.

The low bridge is clearly marked with yellow and black signage and red caution warnings.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “One lane heading towards Liverpool Road was blocked but has since cleared.

“The bus company have arranged their own recovery of the vehicle.”

A spokesperson for Arriva Manchester said: “We can confirm an incident involving one of our double deck buses took place in Patricroft this morning.

“We apologise for any disruption caused by this incident and a full investigation is currently underway.”
