I knew nothing of Salford Red Devils CCJs, says Koukash

Marwan Koukash claimed today not to know that Salford Red Devils had County Court Judgements outstanding against them for unpaid bills.
Since April six suppliers have started legal proceedings against the club to recoup over £50,000.

The main creditor – reported in the Salford Star as clothing firm Under Armour – are owed £39,359.

Two other firms are owed £2,135 and £8,122 each, with figures in the hundreds of pounds for three other companies.

Sitting next to his Chief Executive Martin Vickers at a riotous press conference at the AJ Bell Stadium today, Koukash explained to SalfordOnline.com’s rugby league reporter Andie Riley: “That’s a very simple explanation. I wasn’t aware of [them].

“The total cost of the judgements are around £40,000 which is a drop in the ocean to what I’ve invested in the club.

“When I asked for an explanation from Martin I found out that the stadium company was holding £80,000 of our own money.

“Suppliers were to be paid out of that money, and as we hadn’t had it, it couldn’t be paid.

“When I found out about them that money was made available straight away.”

However, court fees from at least one of the CCJs remain outstanding.

Koukash promised to “put into place a system whereby this can’t happen again”, relieving the pressure on Martin Vickers, a former Salford City Council Strategic Director, and running payments to suppliers through one of his subsidiary companies.

The labyrinthine deals made between Salford Red Devils and Salford City Council to bring Marwan Koukash in as the club’s new owner in January 2012 are now coming into sharp focus.

The Kuwaiti-born racehorse trainer claimed Salford City Council owed him £800,000 today, something the council categorically denies. Both sides have instructed lawyers to look at the claim.
