Carrington Power Station warns of evening and weekend noise for gas testing

Carrington Power Station has warned that local residents could face three weeks of noise disruption as it starts testing gas pipelines.

Alstom and DF Energy are building the new gas-fired 880MW power station on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal near Irlam Wharf.

Local residents across Irlam and Cadishead, and further north up to Barton and Eccles, could be affected.

Pnuematic gas testing will start on Monday 24 August, and run throughout the week and at weekends until 11 September.

The pipeline testing will cause noise disturbances until late in the evening on weekdays, and could start as early as 9am on Sundays.

It’s a procedure that blasts nitrogen under high pressure through pipelines to ensure there are no leaks or problems with the gas supply.

In a statement Alstom and DF said: “Part of the testing will need to take place outside of normal working hours and may cause some disturbance in the evening.

“There may be some noise impact, such as air releases under pressure, for short periods of time, around 10-30 minutes, intermittently on Mondays to Fridays between 5pm and 10pm, Saturdays from 3pm to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 6pm.”

Exclusion zones have been set up around the testing area.

Rainer Lueoend, Site Manager, Alstom, said “We’re keen to keep the community informed about any procedures on site that are likely to have an impact in the local area and apologise in advance of any disturbance caused. “

Residents with concerns can contact the Freephone enquiry line on 0800 169 5290, said Lueoend.

The new power station will be operated by Carrington Power Limited, which is owned by ESB, the state-owned electricity company of Ireland.
