Detectives tonight launched a £50,000 appeal for information over the unsolved murder of Paul Massey.
It is the first nationwide public appeal for information over his violent death.
Mr Massey, well known to police for the past 30 years, was shot and killed outside his Salford home in July by an unidentified gunman who is believed to have followed him home.
Speaking on BBC Crimewatch, DCI Howard Millington from Greater Manchester Police said: “We are offering a reward of £50,000 for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in the death of Paul Massey.”
At around 7.30pm on Sunday 26 July 2015 a white man dressed in military-style camouflage clothing sprayed bullets from an automatic weapon at Mr Massey as he got out of his car outside his Manchester Road home in Clifton, Salford.
Mr Massey, 55, was hit five times in the chest.
The gunman is described as a slim white male wearing a fisherman style hat, green or khaki long sleeve top, a face covering, and dark coloured camouflage trousers tucked into black lace-up boots.
It’s believed he was carrying a black automatic handgun as he walked from Clifton Community Centre, across Manchester Road and approached Mr Massey as he got out of his silver BMW.
Police said he made a 999 call telling them: “I’ve been shot and I need help,” but despite emergency services racing to the address Paul died at the scene.

After spraying a series of bullets the killer ran off towards an alleyway between St Anne’s Church and an open area which leads to Clifton Country Park.
Two days before the killing, at around 7pm on Friday 24 July, a white man in his late 30s to early 40s was spotted in Clifton Country Park wearing a black cap, camouflage trousers and an Uzi-style submachine gun.
No-one has yet been arrested for the murder of Paul Massey.
Anyone with any information is urged to call Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 9775 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111
Crime scene investigators closed off Manchester Road while they carried out detailed examinations of the local area.
But CCTV and appeals for witnesses – including a teenage girl waiting at at bustop – yielded no new information.
The shooting of a 33-year-old man on Normanton Avenue in Weaste was later linked to the case.
Greater Manchester Police Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle said her dedicated teams would look as far back as is necessary to find a link that would prove a motive for his killing.
At Mr Massey’s funeral on Friday 28 August hundreds of people lined the route of his funeral cortege as it approached St Paul’s Church in Salford.

He reportedly acted as a mediator between gangs in other area of the country.
