Young parents wanted for free Salford journalism course

A Salford social enterprise is celebrating after being awarded £10,000 from the Big Lottery to inspire parents to be the next generation of journalists.

Visit from the Stork CIC, home to Visit from the Stork Magazine, the UK’s only publication for young parents, has been given an Awards for All grant to train local people in journalism skills.

The social enterprise will be using their grant to provide a six-week training course for local people who are interested in learning media and journalism skills.

The course, named Essential Skills for Journalism, is the second half of The Stork Academy project, which was launched in Stoke-on-Trent earlier this year.

The project will be based at The Angel Centre on Chapel Street in Salford from Thursday 29 October.

The course will see the parents learn research, interviewing, social media and digital publishing skills, and have their work published on the Visit from the Stork website and in the quarterly magazine.

Kimberly Bond, Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of Visit from the Stork CIC said: “We are on the lookout for 10 local people from Greater Manchester who would love to work in the media industry to come on our course.

“We will train them in media skills to enable them to provide engaging content and quality information for our readers, whilst building a portfolio of work for potential employers.

“More importantly, our project will also equip the trainees with the confidence and skills to go on to college, university, work or do an apprenticeship. Being a trainee will give them valuable work experience and they will be able to see the difference they are making to other parents’ lives.”

Applicants will be asked to complete an application form and attend an informal interview before being accepted on to the course.

Anyone interested in applying or having more information should message Kimberly via the Visit from the Stork Facebook page or email visitfromthestork@gmail.com.
