Donations pile up as ‘magnificent’ Salfordians collect for homeless

SalfordOnline.com published a story last week about a proposed charity fundraiser in which people were asked to donate unwanted clothes and tins of food that would be shared between two local homeless charities Emmaus and Coffee4Craig .

The collection event took place on Saturday 31 October at Emmaus House, 101 Fitzwarren Street in Pendleton, Salford and the response was staggering.

Chlesea Fisher, one of the organisers told us: “It was an incredible day and the Salford people were so generous.

“We were donated bags and bags of warm clothing, so many that it filled up the Coffee4Craig offices.

“There was a steady flow of people throughout the day all eager to help out the less fortunate and I can’t thank them enough.

“Along with Risha Lancaster we sorted through the bags and took overcoats, blankets, hats and gloves to people who were sleeping in Salford and Manchester that night.

“We also raised £84 in cash from our tombola stall and have more to come in from auctions that I did, which we will split between the two charities.”

We spoke to Simon Locke from the Emmaus charity who told us:” The day went incredibly well and the people of Salford have been magnificent.

“I have worked throughout the country but the Salford community spirit is the best I have ever seen, so generous and helpful to others.

“We shall give the clothes we have recieved to the companions who live with us to ensure that they are warm this winter.

“The rest will go into our Emmaus shop to be sold which will hopefully raise money to help keep us going”.

Risha Lancaster who runs Coffee4Craig, speaking to SalfordOnline.com said: “Salford people are well known for how generous they are.

“Unfortunately there’s a massive rise in people we see when the weather gets colder. There’s more people this year than there was last year.

“It’s something that is rising and steadily creeping up and up and up with austerity and government cuts.

“It’s heartbreaking to watch. It’s horrible.”
