All across the city today a silence will fall at 11am as we mark Armistice Day.
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month a two-minute silence is observed to commemorate the end of the First World War and to pay respects and tribute to those killed in combat since 1918.
Today Salford’s war dead will be remembered in a number of ceremonies, marking 97 years since the end of the conflict.
At Regent Square in Ordsall families of local war dead will be remembered by the laying of wreaths.
A new Greengate war memorial for 156 Salford soldiers, to replace one lost by Salford City Council, will be unveiled in front of schoolchildren on Blackfriars Road this morning at 11am.
Metrolink trams will also stop running at 11am in honour of the two-minute silence.
There will be an act of remembrance at 11am at Swinton Cenotaph on Chorley Road in Swinton.
A remembrance day service is also being held at the War Memorial at Peel Green Cemetery from 10.50am.
Rev Dr Anne-Louise Critchlow will be leading the service and young people from Salford City Academy will be taking part.
There will be the opportunity for members of the public to lay crosses during the service.
