Nursery developers expand into Little Hulton with £128k HSBC loan

Bolton-based AW Childcare has secured at £128,000 business loan to open a new nursery at a former pub in Little Hulton, Salford.

Co-owner Paul Brookes secured planning permission for a new 71-place nursery at the former Spa Tavern, a now-derelict pub at the corner of Old Lane and Spa Crescent.

SalfordOnline.com were first to report the news when council planners gave the company the green light in October 2014.

Paul spoke to SalfordOnline.com today about the decision to move into Little Hulton with the help of HSBC.

“The location was ideal for us to start with. When we were doing our research we found there were gaps in terms of childcare provision in Little Hulton, so there was definitely a market for us.

“It’s on a major bus route, car parking is good and the building lends itself well to a nursery with its large size and outdoor space we can turn into a play area.”

Paul admitted AW Childcare would be taking away a former community facility but said the nursery would provide a new focal point for the community.

“We will be putting together a new meeting place for families living on the nearby estate and we will be employing from the local area.”

Around 20 full-time nursery workers will be required when the venue opens.

AW Childcare was set up by Paul Brooks and Angela Wallace from their home in Bolton in 2002.

The company has secured a commercial mortgage and flexible business loan worth £128,000 from HSBC’s Manchester Business Banking team.

It will provide them with the support they need to purchase, refurbish and equip the new day nursery.

HSBC Regional Director of Business Banking, Chris Wormall, said: “AW Childcare moved to HSBC after it became clear they share our commitment to growth.

“HSBC has a strong appetite to support ambitious businesses like AW Childcare and I am pleased that we have been able to back their plans for growth. I look forward to watching them develop in the future.”

Building work is due to start at the former Spa Tavern next week with a launch date yet to be secured, but likely in summer 2015.
