Schoolchildren in Swinton are keeping fit and healthy with a range of extra after-school PE classes thanks to funding from NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
Pupils at St Charles Roman Catholic School, on Moorside Road, Swinton, are embracing zumba, gymnastics, dance and a number of new classes added to their existing range of physical education based classes, meaning that up to an additional 90 pupils a week are now able to make the most of these extra facilities.
The new clubs are open to all pupils in the school, from nursery to year six. As a result of attending the clubs, pupils are now working towards gymnastic awards and have performed in dance displays.
Clare Campbell, head teacher at St Charles RC said:
“The children at St Charles RC are really engaged with PE, they love doing gymnastics and are enthused by completing gymnastic awards.
“We are able to offer a variety of clubs after school including gymnastics, dance and zumba.
“The extended PE curriculum at St Charles RC really encourages children to stay fit and healthy and look after their bodies.
“We are equipping them with skills so that they can aim to be fit for life.”
The provision of these additional after school classes has been made possible thanks to funding provided by NHS Salford CCG via Salford Community and Voluntary Services ‘Universal Health Fund’.
Dr Babar Farooq, GP at Blackfriars Medical Practice in Salford and clinical lead for children and young people at NHS Salford CCG said:
“It is wonderful that St Charles RC is in a position to offer extra after-school classes to its pupils.
“By engaging with their pupils and encouraging them to take part in a variety of physical activities, this will inevitably lead to these pupils continuing to pursue a healthy active lifestyle in later life.”
