Salford Choral Society take on Handel’s Messiah for Christmas

Salford Choral Society will kick off festive celebrations in style with a performance of Handel’s epic ‘Messiah’.

Featuring four soloists and more than 50 singers, it promises to be a magical night of traditional Christmas entertainment. Eleanor Garside is the soprano, Adam Temple-Smith the tenor, Terence Ayebare the bass and mezzo-soprano soloist is Helen Anne Gregory

The 1741 oratorio, written in three parts, will be familiar and recognisable to all music lovers with the section proclaiming “Hallelujah” – a word that becomes ubiquitous at Christmas.

Sometimes thought of as an Easter work, Messiah is written in three parts: the first proclaims the prophecies of the birth of the Messiah, the second tells the story of the Passion while the third part proclaims the Resurrection.

Accompanied by the Northern Baroque Sinfonia the group will take on the classic oratorio at the Royal Northern College of Music on Saturday 19 December from 7.30pm.

If you’ve never heard ‘Messiah’ but you want to try something traditional this Christmas, take a look at the Kings College Cambridge version on Youtube to give you a taster.

Salford Choral Society will be under the baton of Guest Conductor Eugene Monteith, who himself made his debut in 2015 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Ulster Orchestra and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
