BASIC helps over 50 people with brain injuries back into work

A Salford based charity that provides rehabilitation services for those with brain and spinal injuries has helped 54 people back into work in the last 12 months.

The Brain and Spinal Injury Centre (BASIC) helps to rebuild the lives of people who suffer from life-changing conditions and those who have sustained serious head injuries, operating an array of services to support people in their recovery from conditions such as traumatic head/brain injury, spinal injury, stroke and brain hemorrhage.

Affiliated to the Greater Manchester Clinical Neuroscience Centre at Salford Royal Hospitals, BASIC relies on funding and support from local partners to deliver specially tailored programmes of therapy to help people secure their position back in the workplace.

In 2013, the charity was unable to fund its vocational rehabilitation service so Birchall Blackburn Law, which has offices across the North West, pledged £90,000 to support the charity.

The funding has enabled 54 people with head injuries gain employment and return to work in roles including NHS nursing and administration, retail management, accountancy and mechanics in the past 12 months.

Dianne Yates, partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, said: “Some of our clients require specialist rehabilitation programmes after they have suffered a life-changing brain or spinal injury.

“We have seen first-hand how the charity helps reduce isolation, improve confidence and encourage independence. Naturally we wanted to help it continue its amazing services.”

Wendy Edge, chief executive officer at BASIC, added: “Getting back to work is extremely important socially and economically and we would not be able to provide this specialist help without Birchall Blackburn Law’s support.

“We are indebted to the firm for its generosity and commitment to helping those recovering with brain injury re-build their lives.”
