Cromwell Road crash sparks debate on 20mph Eccles speed limit cut

A car crash on the narrowed Cromwell Road in Eccles has re-ignited debate in the local community over the speed limit on the street.

On Saturday 9 January at around 7pm police were called to a collision at the junction of Milton Street and Cromwell Road between a white Mercedes C-Class and a silver Peugeot 305.

The Peugeot ended up on the grass at the top of Milton Street.

One man in the Peugeot 305 suffered minor facial wounds and was taken to hospital but luckily there were no other reports of any other injuries.

Locals living nearby posted scores of comments and pictures on SalfordOnline.com’s 15,000-member Facebook group.

In November a 14-year-old girl suffered a broken jaw in a head-on car crash on Cromwell Road.

And in July an 81-year-old man was hospitalised in a head-on collision.

Cromwell Road has been artificially narrowed with ‘chokers’, curb extensions intended to slow down drivers at pinch points along the street.

But there’s parked cars all along the cut-through road and accidents are not infrequent.

Saturday’s smash has again sparked debate over plans to cut speed limits in the local area.

Around 30 streets between Peel Street, Green Lane, the A57 and the railway lines will be dropped to 20mph.

Speaking to SalfordOnline.com, Councillor Peter Wheeler, who represents Eccles, said plans were due to go ahead this spring.

New traffic calming measures in addition to the ‘chokers’ are due to be installed.

“We’ve been pushing for this as local councillors,” he said.

“20mph signs will be going up in late February and early March.”

He added: “The council’s got its part to play but really it’s down to the drivers.

“People just drive too fast on that street and if this doesn’t change, I fear we could have a fatal accident in the near future.”
