Motorcyclist seriously injured in Walkden Road accident

Emergency services were called to Walkden Road in Walkden this afternoon at 3.10pm after receiving reports that a motorcyclist was trapped underneath a van.

At a pedestrian crossing outside Walkden College the 24-year-old rider of a black Lexmoto Arrow motorcycle had run into the back of a silver Mercedes Sprinter van and became trapped underneath the rear of the vehicle.

Police closed the road in both directions between the A580 East Lancs Road and Birch Road.

The accident was witnessed by a number of college students.

Fire crews and emergency medical teams from the North West Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

The rider was treated by paramedics and extricated from underneath the van.

He was placed on a spinal board and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that his condition is not considered to be life-threatening, and his injuries, while serious, are not considered to be life-changing.

Walkden Road was closed in both directions and motorists are being advised to use alternative routes.

Update: As of 4.02pm on Wednesday 20 January police were given the go-ahead to re-open Walkden Road in both directions.

Delays are still expected on public transport.
