Children from Worsley Swimming Club are taking on a 200-length challenge to raise money for Marie Curie cancer care.
20 children aged between eight and 16 are taking part in the national swimathon and have already raised £130 in advance of tonight’s gruelling long-distance swim.
From Friday 17 to Sunday 19 April, swimmers across the country will take the plunge and take part in Swimathon 2015, fundraising for Marie Curie.
The UK’s biggest fundraising swimming event will see thousands of people get involved at hundreds of pools around the country.
Catherine Redshaw, mum of 10-year-old Thomas Redshaw who will be swimming tonight, told SalfordOnline: “The event is going to be fantastic, the money will do a lot of good.
“I’m an Oncology Nurse so work with people who have cancer, and Marie Curie rely heavily on donations and charitable events.
“Everyone has been really hopeful in terms of the organising.
The pool are only charging us £60 to rent the place out, this will cover the Lifeguards.
Everything else has been given to us for free.”
As a reward for the efforts of the swimmers, there will be a midnight feast at the end of the event.
