5* Review: Duck in the Truck – The Lowry, Salford Quays

SalfordOnline.com Rating: 5 out of 5

This is the tale of a duck in a truck – a truck that was stuck in some yucky brown muck.

Based on the bestselling book by children’s author Jez Alborough, the Blunderbuss Theatre Company were absolutely brilliant from start to finish and I left with a very happy 6-year-old who though it was fantastic.

This was an exceptional and endearing story set in captivating rhythmic style making it an excellent performance to watch.

The audience immediately warmed to all the characters as before the show George, Harry and Arthur introduce themselves to all the excited children and talking to their mummies and daddies as well.

Little did we know this was the start of much more audience participation.

My son was given a marrow to hold before the show started and he sat all proud in his seat not knowing why.

The show started and it soon became apparent when George, Harry and Arthur were looking for all the vegetables to make “veggie table soup” There was one ingredient missing and guess what? My son had it.

The marrow joined the rest of the vegetables and it wasn’t long before the vegetables were bursting into song, spraying the audience with water or the leeks saying they were going on holiday to The Leek District.

Absolutely hilarious and not a dry eye in the audience.

Next two members of the audience became stones, sitting on the bridge waiting for the duck in the truck to arrive.

The truck would hit the stone and get stuck in the sticky brown muck. The boy was too small and the man was too big, what were they going to do?

A solution was found and when the duck in the truck came over the bridge it hit the stone and got stuck in the mud. Oh dear, how would he get out?

The duck tried and tried but just couldn’t move, he jumped out of his truck into the sticky brown mud and as he walked the children laughed as with every footstep was a silly trumpy noise which made all the children giggle.

It wasn’t long before the animals arrived on set to help. A sheep in a jeep and a frog in a bush saw the truck stuck and gave it a push.

But the truck stayed stuck! A young boy from the audience even tried to push the truck from behind. But it was well and truly stuck. Could a goat in a boat get them out if this mess?

No-one could help so everyone in the audience grabbed the imaginary rope and pulled and pulled until the duck in the truck became unstuck. Hurrah, the duck in the truck was free.

We had a quacking good time and can’t wait for them to come back to The Lowry to perform another show.

This really was a wonderful and interactive performance of Duck in the Truck and everyone left with a big smile in their face.
