Pupils at St Mark’s Primary School led with rapturous applause today as Ryan Giggs appeared to present prizes to the winners of a competition for his local restaurant George’s.
All 350 pupils from the Worsley school were offered the chance to put their menu ideas in front of the ex-Manchester United star.
The Barton Road bistro will donate 50% of the sales of the winning design to the school’s Parent Teacher Association when it debuts on 26 February.
With the whole school taking part, the competition was fierce.
And it was a tough decision for Giggsy and his judging panel, which included restaurant directors Kelvin Gregory and Bernie Taylor.
11-year-old Luke Armitage scooped the top prize for his Chocolate Volcano Fondant cake idea, which includes a free night out at George’s Worsley for his family at Giggs’ invitation.
George’s head chef oversaw the whole six-week process.
In a specially-arranged assembly, the atmosphere reached fever pitch as Ryan entered to present the certificates and announce the winners.
The runners up included eight year old Phoebe Tuck, who put forward a spicy chicken salad and couscous design, and seven-year-old Evie Johnson, who created an imaginative butternut squash chocolate cake.
The Class of 92 star admitted he didn’t himself have the culinary skills to back up the children’s imagination, but was delighted by the reaction of the pupils – even if the winner was a Manchester City fan!
