Car explosion in Ordsall believed to be caused by large firework


Police investigating an explosion involving a car in Salford believe it was caused by a large firework.

Shortly after 11:35pm on Wednesday 10 February 2016, police were called to Cloughfield Avenue, Ordsall to reports of an explosion.

Officers attended and found a damaged Fiat Punto.

Cordons were initially put in place on Cloughfield Avenue and Robert Hall Street however these roads are now open. A scene remains in place on Cloughfield Avenue.

The investigation into the events leading up to the incident is at an early stage and enquiries are on-going however it is believed that the damage may have been by large or industrial type fire work.

Superintendent Mark Kenny said: “I know there has been a lot of speculation about what caused the damage to the car but we now believe it was a form of large firework, although the investigation is on-going.

“This incident and the subsequent speculation have understandably caused a lot of concern in the community but we have launched a full investigation into what has happened and our enquiries are on-going.

“We have a number of officers in the area so residents may notice an increase in police presence and if anybody has any concerns or information they feel may help then please feel free to approach one of them.”
