Thomas Derbyshire, aged 17 from Salford was lucky enough to spend two days on stage at Oldham Coliseum working with professional actors on hit performance The Pitmen Painters.
This really was a chance in a lifetime for Thomas, who studies drama at Urban Stage Theatre School in Swinton. Thomas hopes to follow in the footsteps of his drama teachers Helen Kay and Simeon Truby who are currently performing in The Pitmen Painters until the 27th February.
Throughout the two days, Thomas was involved in running through the lines, helping with the stage sets and lighting and gaining a real insight into what life is like working in the theatre both on and off stage.
Urban Stage principles Helen and Simeon who play Oliver and Helen Sutherland in the play, organised for Thomas to spend 2 days with them and are so very proud of his enthusiasm and professionalism throughout his time.
Helen said: “Thomas was absolutely fantastic to have on set and we’re delighted that he has grasped this opportunity. As well as gaining valuable experience he was a great help and we just hope it hasn’t put him off. I’m sure Thomas will agree that as well as being a lot of fun there is also a lot of hard work that goes into every performance.”
The Pitmen Painters was written by the author of Billy Elliot, Lee Hall and will be showing at the Oldham Coliseum from February 5th – 27th. The popular performance has already received rave reviews.
Based on a true story, The Pitmen Painters is about a group of miners who were taught to paint. It’s a funny, feelgood, moving tale of a group of ordinary men who achieved extraordinary things.
