Margaret celebrates 100th birthday in Salford

A centenarian has celebrated her 100th birthday in style.

Salix Homes tenant Margaret O’Malley enjoyed a grand birthday bash with her family and friends to mark the occasion on February 13.

Margaret was born in County Mayo, Ireland, on September 13, 1916. She moved to Salford in 1951, where she met her late husband Anthony, who was also Irish.

The pair married in in 1956 at St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Higher Broughton and went on to have two children – Mary and Anthony.

After moving from Ireland, Margaret and her family settled in the Higher Broughton area and she worked for many years as a dinner lady at St Malachy’s Primary School in Collyhurst.

Margaret, who is cared for by her daughter Mary, is one of our longest serving tenants at Rialto Gardens where she has lived for the past 29 years.

Margaret has seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and says the secret to longevity is a hot-toddy.

She said: “You have to work hard and mind your own business – that’s the secret, along with a hot toddy at night.”

Sue Sutton, our executive director of operations, added: “Margaret is a remarkable lady and everyone at Salix Homes would like to wish her a very happy 100th birthday and we hope we get to see her celebrate many more birthdays in the future.”
