Barbara Keeley, MP for Worsley and Eccles South, is backing the Labour In for Britain Campaign to keep Britain in the European Union.
Barbara pledged her support for the campaign following the recent announcement from the Prime Minister that the referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union will take place on 23rd June 2016.
The Labour In for Britain campaign is calling for Britain to stay in Europe to protect working people and stand up for rights in the workplace. European Union membership makes Britain a major player in world trade.
Almost half of Britain’s exports go to European Union countries, worth £227 billion to the UK economy last year. Britain receives on average £26.5 billion of investment every year from other countries in the European Union. UK jobs and businesses, both large and small, are dependent on trade with Europe.
Membership of the European Union has given vital rights to British workers and the European Union’s rules protect British consumers, British workers and the environment. Because Europe is central to jobs and prosperity, Britain needs a strong voice at the top table which decides the rules on everything from free trade to fishing.
Barbara said:
“The decision on whether our country should remain in the European Union is one of the most important political decisions that we will make in our lifetime. It will have a big impact on both current and future generations. It will have an impact on our future prosperity, jobs, security and our place in the world.”
“I believe that it is in Britain’s best interest to remain in the European Union. Our membership brings us jobs, growth and investment, protects British workers and consumers and keeps us safe. I am concerned that by leaving we would put that at risk.
Across Worsley and Eccles South many local businesses rely on access to the world’s largest single market. Local people benefit from our membership, which has helped to secure workers’ rights to minimum paid leave, rights for agency workers, paid maternity and paternity leave, equal pay, anti-discrimination laws and protection and enhanced consumer rights.”
“I believe that Britain’s continued membership of the European Union is vital to jobs and to our prosperity and that is why I will be campaigning with Labour In for Britain across Worsley and Eccles South and voting for Britain to remain in the European Union on 23rd June 2016.”
