Back #TeamSalford as School Games get underway


Some of the city’s most talented youngsters will take the up the fight to be crowned School Games Champions this week.

Tuesday 15 March is the culmination of months of hard work as Salford’s top sportsmen and women under the age of 18 battle it out with schools in Manchester, Trafford, Rochdale, Oldham, Bury, Stockport and Tameside.

Ellesmere Park’s Oakwood Academy will be lining up for U16 Tag Rugby Union, while pupils representing St Patrick’s RC High School in Winton will take to the pool for the Year 7 and Year 8 Swimming Gala at Manchester Aquatics Centre.

Oasis MediaCityUK Academy on Trafford Road will showcase their skills in the U13 Table Tennis boys and girls teams.

In volleyball, St Patrick’s Year 9 and Year 10 girls are vying for the title, Walkden High School have their best talent from Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 boys to choose from and Moorside High School Year 7 girls will attempt to beat allcomers to be called champions.

Finally Moorside High School’s Year 7 netball, Walkden High School’s U13 girls handball and Salford City Academy’s U13 boys handball teams will get up and running in the race to be crowned winners of the Greater Manchester Winter School Games.

Launched in the wake of the 2012 London Olympics, the School Games aims to inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

Students from Salford City Academy will also be providing support as Crew Officials at the games.

Lyndsey Nolan, Salford School Games Organiser, who is based at Salford City Academy, said: “It is fantastic to see so many schools and young people representing Salford, showing pride in themselves, their schools and their local area at the Winter School Games.

“I hope that all those taking part enjoy themselves and wish them all the very best of luck.”
