Man died of heroin overdose in Pendleton, inquest finds

A 35-year-old man from Salford died from a drug overdose, an inquest at Bolton Coroners Court found.

Ian Thompson, 35, of no fixed address, died on 20 February 2015 on an area of wasteland near Greenwood Street in Pendleton.

The court heard from his mother, who spoke of Mr Thompson as “a loving son” but one who had had numerous problems with substance abuse.

Evidence was presented at the inquest that around the time of his death, Mr Thompson had spent a few months staying at the Thomas House drug rehabilitation clinic.

At this point in his life, the 35-year-old had been clean for a large period of time, so his tolerance to heroin and other drugs had naturally decreased.

He was also said to have suffered from depression, however it was agreed that he never considered taking his own life at any point.

Dr Armstrong lead the post-mortem and confirmed with a toxicology report that there was large quantities of morphine, taken as heroin, in his system at the time of his death.

There were also trace quantities of cocaine which were said not to have contributed to his passing.

He added that Mr Thompson’s lower tolerance for drugs may have contributed to his death.

Around the time of his death, it is believed he purchased heroin and cocaine with a friend and then decided to use them on an area of wasteland in Pendleton.

It was confirmed again by Dr Armstrong that there were no signs of third party involvement in Ian’s death.

His 31-year-old friend was also ruled out of having contributed to his death.

Following Ian’s bad reaction to the drugs, his friend travelled to a pay phone where he contacted emergency services.

When North West Ambulance paramedics arrived just after midnight on 20 February 2015, he had already passed away.

Coroner Rachel Griffin recorded a verdict of 1a morphine overdose which was taken as heroin.
