Important changes to payroll in April 2016
The Employer Bulletin: February 2016 is still a must read for employers because it contains comprehensive information and updates about the changes that impact on payroll in April 2016. End of RTI easement for micro employers beyond 5 April 2016
In April 2014, HMRC introduced an easement for existing micro employers (those with 9 or fewer employees) to report their PAYE information for the tax month ‘on or before’ the last payment date of the tax month (until April 2016).This easement will no longer apply after 5 April 2016 and from that date all employers will need to report PAYE information ‘on or before’ each payday. Best practice examples on how to successfully report ‘on or before’ paying an employee can be found in the PAYE Manual. Get help to finish the tax year 2015 to 2016. Start the tax year 2016 to 2017 using form P9X (2016) to work out your employees tax code from 6 April 2016. Look up the rates and thresholds for 2016 to 2017.

The National Living Wage becomes law from 1 April 2016
From 1 April 2016 workers aged 25 and over will be entitled to a new minimum pay rate of £7.20 per hour, called the National Living Wage. Find out more by visiting the National Living Wage website and by registering to hear our recorded webinar on the National Minimum and National Living Wage.

Scottish Rate of Income Tax and the ‘S’ code from 6 April 2016
The Scottish Rate of Income Tax (SRIT) comes into effect from 6 April 2016. The ‘S’ code depends on the residential address of an employee. Encourage employees to tell HMRC if their address changes, as this will help us to correctly identify any Scottish taxpayers to make sure they pay the right amount of tax. HMRC offers customers extra help to protect against fraud
From 29 March 2016, HMRC will start to offer more Self Assessment customers “2 Step Verification” when logging into their Tax Account. This means customers will be able to link their mobile phone with their log-in details if they wish, which will help protect their account against fraud.
