Police were left baffled by a man and woman who crashed a van on the A580 near the Irlams o’th Height roundabout and dumped it in the middle of the road.
Officers blocked off the Lancaster Road exit of the East Lancs Road at around 8.20pm last night, Wednesday 23 March.
Three police cars were stationed on the Manchester-bound carriageway for over two hours while police investigated the scene.
No oncoming traffic was allowed onto the East Lancs until after 11.30pm.
A white Ford Transit van had smashed into a safety barrier.
The driver, a male believed to be in his 40s, and his female passenger, were seen jumping out of the van and into a blue car nearby, before speeding off down the A580 towards Pendleton.
Forensics officers scoured the van for clues but found “no evidence of criminality”, police said today.
An investigation is ongoing to find the man and woman to clear up the matter, but details are scarce, so anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 101.
