Firefighters use cold cutting lance to tackle Cobden Street blaze

Firefighters used high pressure cutting equipment to put out a fire on an industrial estate in Salford last night.

Police and fire services closed off Cobden Street at around 8.15pm after fire broke out in a steel shipping container in a breakers yard.

15 firefighters from Salford, Agecroft and Eccles spent over an hour and a half tackling the blaze.

Greater Manchester Fire’s ultra high-pressure cold cutting lance can pierce a hole through a wall, allowing crews to attack a fire from outside a building.

The lance then pumps water onto the fire in a mist of droplets, smothering the flames and rapidly reducing the temperature.

Crews also used a breathing kit and two hose reels to dampen the heat and bring the scene under control.

No-one was reported injured.

The road was re-opened by midnight on Tuesday.

Cobden Street, off the A576 Broughton Road, is home to numerous long-standing industrial businesses, including Glendale Foods, Flex ‘n’ Tone gym, and will also be the new site for a £500,000 home forpyrotechnics and art firm Walk the Plank, as detailed here.
