Concrete hits cars on M60 at Barton Bridge causing delays

One lane is still closed and traffic is queueing on the M60 at Junction 11 for Eccles after piece of concrete hit cars and scattered across the carriageway.

As of 5pm on Thursday 12 May the incident is causing delays around the junctions for the A57 Liverpool Road and the M602.

Traffic is slow all the way up to Junction 16 at Clifton/Pendlebury for the A666, to Junction 10 for Trafford Park.

Police officers were called to the scene at Barton High Level Bridge shortly before 2pm on Thursday 12 May.

Multiple drivers had reported that part of the carraigeway had crumbled and a large piece of concrete was in the middle of the road, police say.

Initially at least three drivers had slowed down to a standstill to check if their cars had been damaged.

Highways England, which manages the motorway network, said the concrete surrounding an expansion joint had flipped up and hit a number of vehicles.

As of 5.15pm structural engineers have now completed temporary repairs to the road surface but lane one remains closed.

Drivers are reporting an extra 20 minute delay on top of their normal travel time.
