Petrolheads got a glimpse of around £5 million-worth of racing power at MediaCityUK today as supercars parked up in the Piazza at Salford Quays.
Some of the world’s the most expensive and rarest cars with racing pedigree went on show ahead of the Cholmondley Power & Speed festival, which returns to Cheshire on 10-12 June.
The famous event this year is dedicated to supercars past and present: from the simply extravagant, to the outlandish and ridiculous.
On show in Salford today were a some of the least-practical but most beautiful cars on earth: the monstrous track-only V12 2008 Ferrari FXX, which commands a 789bhp engine and when started up sounds like a jet engine; the 2015 BAC Mono – still the only single seater road car in the world, and second only to a Pagani Huayra round the Top Gear test track, pulling 0-60 in under three seconds; and promised later today – the classic rally machine, the ever-stunning 1984 Audi Quattro S1.
These Audis were tuned to ridiculous levels for Group B rallying and some could boast over 500bhp from as car that weighed about as much as a bag of sugar.
Alongside wakeboarding demonstrations in Dock 10, the pre-launch event featured the McLaren F1, a Ford Focus WRC rally beast, a Lotus Elise, and 80s pinup, a deep red Lamborghini Countach.
Crowds watch race events on a 3.2-mile track next to Cholmondeley Castle in Malpas, Cheshire, with drivers taking control of high-performance cars against the clock.
Also promised to be taking to the starting line are a 1975 Lancia Stratos, a 1976 Ferarri 308 tuned for Group B rally and the phenomenal power-to-weight ratio of the 1974 Porsche 911 RSR.
