Salford have top eight in sight with Wigan in the way

Salford Red Devils hope to secure their third straight win when they take on Wigan Warriors at The AJ Bell on Friday evening.

The hosts have ironically been in form since they were docked six hard-earned points by the RFL for alleged salary cap breaches.

Head Coach Ian Watson told BBC Radio Manchester: “Hopefully the boys can learn from what we’ve done well in the last two games.

“That’s what top eight teams do, back their results up.

“What we were doing was win, loss, win, loss, that’s not what we want to do.

“We want to be in the top eight and we’re aiming for that with or without the deducted points.”

Meanwhile Wigan will be looking to secure three away wins in a row, after a 40-8 demolition of Leeds Rhinos, and a thrilling 33-26 encounter with Castleford Tigers, both inside a week.

Ian Watson’s men will also want to strike revenge on The Warriors after Friday’s visitors inflicted a narrow 20-16 defeat on The Red Devils back in February.

That game at The DW Stadium saw Salford overturn a 14 point deficit to level the scores with five minutes to go, but a last gasp winning try from Derek Manfredi denied the local outfit an historic win.

All three Tomkins brothers could feature in the same match on Friday.

Both Sam and Joel have been named in Wigan’s 19-man squad, whilst youngest of the trio Logan has been named in the Salford side.

If so, It would be the first time three players from the same family have competed in the same game since all four of the Burgess brothers competed for South Sydney Rabbitohs against West Tigers in 2013.

Salford winger Niall Evalds has been ruled out of Friday’s game Wigan with a knee injury.

Evalds sustained the injury in last week’s 38-8 win over Wakefield and has been replaced by Justin Carney.

Wigan Warriors, looking for a third successive away win, have named an unchanged 19-man squad following Sunday’s victory at Castleford.

Ben Flower will also make his 100th appearance for Wigan if played on Friday.

The Welsh forward has been rebuilding his reputation as on of Wigan’s key players after his infamous incident with Lance Hohaia at the 2014 Grand Final.

Flower, 28, became the first player to be sent off in a Grand Final after punching Hohaia whilst the St Helens man was on the ground.
