An open day in Salford on Thursday 9 June will show off the new 18-month apprencticeships available with housing association Salix Homes.
11 roles are available for people from Salford in environment, first response, business services and customer services.
Last year’s recruits, all locals age 17 to 41, picked up permanent work for Salix Homes and their contractors including Emanuel Whittaker, Seddon, and A Connolly Ltd.
As well as earning along the way, successful applicants to the new scheme will study towards an NVQ level 2 qualification in subjects such as grounds maintenance and business administration.
The head of Salix Homes, CEO Lee Sugden, left school at 16 and says he was fortunate enough to be given an apprenticeship opportunity so he wanted to pay it back to the local community.
He said: “Salix Homes has an aim to support one local person into work or training every day of the year by 2020 and our apprenticeship programme is a key part of that ambition.
“These are fantastic opportunities and I’d encourage anyone who lives in Salford and is looking to launch their career to drop into the open day to find out more.”
The drop-in day takes place from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Salix’s offices: Diamond House, 2 Peel Cross Road, Salford, M5 4DT.
All are welcome and invited to bring along a one-page CV if they have one.
Since 2013 Salix have recruited 17 apprentices with 7 in 10 going on to secure permanent jobs. 27 apprentices are also employed by Salix’s construction partners.
Kade Hedgecock from Higher Broughton has just finished his one-year grounds maintenance apprenticeship and has secured a job with a local firm.
Kade said: “Before the Salix Homes apprenticeship I hadn’t had much luck on the work front. I’d tried joinery at college but it wasn’t for me and had been through a few jobs at call centres and in warehouses but didn’t like either.
“When I got the apprenticeship it was just what I needed; I’d finally found something I enjoyed doing.
“It’s the horticulture side I really took to and having the opportunity to study for an NVQ level 2 with YMCA Training set me up with the skills and knowledge I needed.”
