A derelict Salford University building in Lower Broughton went up in flames last night.
Three fire crews from Eccles and Salford were called to the former Castle Irwell student village on Cromwell Road at around 4.30pm.
Firefighters discovered a ground floor blaze in the two-storey vacant building and spent nearly two hours on scene putting out the fire and making the scene safe.
It’s not yet known how the fire started, although deliberate ignition is suspected.
Castle Irwell closed as Salford University student accommodation in June 2015.
The land, and the playing fields adjoining the former halls are still owned by the university.
