M61 re-opens after woman, 24, dies in lorry collision


The M61 has now re-opened after a 24-year-old was killed on the motorway early this morning.

Police belive the woman’s Ford Fiesta span out after her car hit the central reservation near Bolton at around 3.30am on Monday morning.

As she got out of her vehicle to inspect the damage she was hit by a lorry suffering fatal injuries.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The M61 was closed around the accident between Junction 4 at Farnworth and Junction 5 at Westhoughton.

Drivers reported long rush-hour delays with heavy congestion throughout the morning.

North West Motorway Police tweeted that the route was to re-open by 11am.

Highways England confirmed that the M61 was open at 11.15am on Monday 4 July.

Greater Manchester Police are still investigating the accident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or was in the area around 3am this morning should contact police on 101.

Police Constable Paul Hailwood of the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “I would like to extend my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this young woman.

“We currently have specially trained officers working to provide them with any support they need at this tragic time.

“We are appealing for anybody with information to please come forward and contact police.”
