Businesses in Salford are being urged to come forward and join Salford Red Devils Foundation in a major new cycling challenge next week at the Trafford Centre.
On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July the Foundation host a ‘Virtual Ride to Rio’.
Only the fittest will survive as the Foundation pits office teams against one another to see who can claim the crown.
Teams of six will race in a relay on static bikes to see who can ride the furthest.
It’s all in support of the #RidetoRio campaign.
The 3,000-mile overseas adventure is taking place to raise money and awareness for a number of different charities, including the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Rugby League Cares, and the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity.
Former Salford player Paul ‘Highto’ Highton – interviewed by SalfordOnline.com here – has the Foundation logo on his jersey as he cycles thousands of miles in blistering heat from London to Rio de Janeiro.
He’s travelling with a team of six, including former Great Britain rugby international Keith Senior.
Paul is live-tweeting his progress and you can follow him @Highto14.
Now Paul’s team have completed the European leg of their journey, which saw them cycle through England, France, Spain and Portugal, before flying to the northern tip of Brazil.
Back in Blighty, office teams from across the city are being invited to put their pedals to the metal.
There’s the chance to meet and race against celebrities from the world of rugby league, as well as claiming office bragging rights.
There’ll also be a chance to win Paul’s high-tech bike – the one he’s still using now to complete this epic challenge.
Salford Red Devils Foundation Director Mark Brocklehurst is looking forward to meeting teams at the Trafford Centre next week.
He said: “The event is the perfect opportunity for people to challenge themselves and their friends, whilst also supporting Highto and the team, and building up as much money for the charities as possible.
“It’s an incredible achievement to get this far that takes a special kind of toughness and motivation.
“We know Salford has some of the fittest and fastest office teams – and we’re invited them all to get involved with not just racing, but cheering on charity fundraisers too.
“The Saturday is set to be a brilliant day for everyone.
“From 12 noon fans will have the chance to have their photo taken with the Super League trophy – the sport’s biggest prize.”
