A woman in her 70s was fatally injured in a collision with a bus on the East Lancs Road in Salford.
The double-decker First bus was travelling along the A580 near the blue pedestrian crossing bridges at Eccles Road in Swinton when the incident happened.
The elderly woman is understood to have been a pedestrian.
Paramedics were scrambled to the East Lancs Road at 6pm on Wednesday evening.
She was attended to at the scene and taken to hospital but sadly passed away at around 7.40pm.
Police shut the busy route between Lancaster Road and Worsley Road heading out of Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Unit are investigating and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Specially trained officers are supporting the woman’s family.
Pictures from the scene show the front window of the bus smashed with debris scattered across the carriageway.
A black Nissan Juke 4×4 was also crashed at the scene. No-one else has been reported injured.
In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 6:10pm on Wednesday 20 July 2016, police were called to East Lancashire Road, Swinton to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a bus.
“Officers attended and found a woman believed to be in her 70’s with very serious injuries before she was taken to hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead at around 7:40pm.”
Police Constable Dermot Murray from the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This is a tragic incident where a woman has sadly lost her life and we are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.
“The investigation is in the early stages and we are currently working to provide the woman’s family with support from specially trained officers.”
