Fire crews and police are at the scene of house fire near Walkden town centre this afternoon.
No-one is thought to have been injured in the blaze on Bridgewater Road.
The scene is near Walkden baths, officially known as Worsley Leisure Centre.
Fire is believed to have broken out in a first floor bedroom before flames engulfed the inside of the property, with smoke pouring out from upstairs windows to the front and rear.
Crews were alerted by a passer-by who just happened to spot the fire as he was driving past.
He reportedly banged on the door and got no answer, so kicked in the front door in a desperate attempt to see if anyone needed help.
It’s understood there was no-one inside the property at the time; if there were, they certainly managed to escape before the flames took hold.
Police have closed Bridgewater Road in both directions.
Traffic officers said the closure would remain in place until at least 4.30pm on Thursday 21 July.
Rush-hour traffic is expected to be extra heavy around the scene, especially coming off the East Lancs Road at Ellenbrook and Boothstown.
Firefighters isolated the electricity and gas at the property but remain on scene this afternoon to make the scene safe.
