Police probe after 15in machete left in Salford street

Greater Manchester Police are investigating after a large machete was found dumped on a roundabout in Salford.

The blade, which has a black handle and is between 12 and 15 inches long, was found at Cromwell Roundabout, at the junction of Cromwell Road and Gerald Road.

Police were alerted to the find by a late-night dog walker.

The area is popular with families and is home to the former Castle Irwell student halls and bar.

Eyewitnesses who happened to be passing told how police arrived at 2.30am on Friday 22 July, where officers found the large weapon on the ground.

One, who did not want to be identified, said: “This knife wasn’t your average, ‘Let’s cut some bread in the kitchen’, knife this was a big proper knife that you would imagine is used for all the wrong reasons.”

Police are now investigating the weapon forensically to see if it can be linked to any recent crimes.
