PC David Barnes said: “A man was approached by the conductor during a routine ticket check. The man did not have a ticket and refused to pay. The conductor told the man, who was intending to travel to Manchester, that he would have to leave the train at the next station, which was Warrington Central.

“The man left the train at Warrington and waited until the conductor was about to close the door before spitting at her.”

The train was the 6.22am Trans Pennine Express service from Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough.

After reviewing CCTV, officers are today issuing an image of a man they want to speak to about the incident.

“This is appalling behaviour, especially considering that the conductor was simply doing her job. We believe the man in the image will have information about what happened and we urge anyone who recognises him to contact us,” added PC Barnes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 295 01/09/2016. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
