Salford is a city of world-firsts, from the Vegetarian Society to public libraries and street lighting, but this weekend will see a first of an entirely different kind.
As part of a free family garden party on Sunday 12 July at Ordsall Hall contestants can wobble their way to victory in the first ever World Jelly Wanging Championship.
“Marks in jelly wanging are not just judged on distance like coarser sports involving cow pats or wellies,” said organiser Liz McNabb, who came up with the idea.
“Wangers are judged on ingenuity and creativity as well.”
Entry is free but contestants will have to bring their own jelly!
“We encourage both overarm and underarm wanging and the use of implements such as spoons is allowed under the rules,” added Liz.
Prizes are on offer for the most inventive throws, and organisers hope to have the contest verified by officials from the Guinness Book of World Records.
Among a host of of other activities on the day will be a climbing wall, creative arts and crafts activities, giant games and a bouncy castle.
The garden party, organised in association with Friends of Salford Museums Association, runs from 12 noon to 4pm.
