Free breakfast for people on low income in Salford

A pioneering new scheme set up at the Salford Unemployed Resource Centre on Liverpool Road in Eccles is offering free breakfast for people on low income.

You’re also eligible if you receive benefits or if you’re an ex-offender.

But the numbers taking up the offer are so low that the programme will be cut if more people don’t take advantage.

The free breakfasts are on offer every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 12 noon.

The aim of the project is to support not only unemployed people but also offenders and ex-offenders who do not normally receive statutory supervision from the Probation Services.

Project Officer Lee Wakeham said: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for most people and sadly many people for various reasons can’t afford this basic meal.

“Our breakfast consists of cereal, fruit, tea and coffee, because we are dependent on donations of non-perishable foods from local supermarkets.”

The Salford Prison Project can also offer advice finding accomodation, provide education and training, referral to drug and alcohol teams, help in providing a CV and free gym membership.
