Game on to welcome rugby World Cup to Salford

It’s game on this weekend to welcome the Rugby World Cup trophy to Salford.

Rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis cup, will visit Eccles Rugby Football Club on Sunday July 26 as part of the Rugby World Cup trophy tour.

Youngsters from the club, which is one of few in the country to have two all female teams and runs its own Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, have organised a junior tag rugby tournament to welcome the cup.

Councillor Ann-Marie Humphreys, assistant mayor for culture, leisure and sport, said: “The Webb Ellis cup is coming back to its roots as William Webb Ellis, born in Salford in 1806, is credited with founding rugby league football at Rugby school.

“The cup is travelling through Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland , Wales and England before arriving at Twickenham on September 18 ahead of the opening ceremony.

“It’s a chance to see some of the juniors in action who may go on to be future great players and be part of the excitement around the Rugby World Cup.”
