Police chief Superintendent Mary Doyle says detectives will “look back as far as is necessary” to find a link that will prove a motive for Mr Massey’s killing.
At a press conference in Swinton today she said: “We’re getting very little by way of information from the community and obviously somebody out there knows what went on and why and they need to search their souls and come forward and tell us about it.
“It’s way too early in the investigation to speculate on a motive and we are keeping an open mind.

Police and Crime Commissioner comments on violent crime and murder of Paul Massey: Tony Lloyd, the current Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester, and the man already elected interim Greater Manchester Mayor, has commented today.
He said: “This is of course a personal tragedy for the family of the victim and our thoughts are with them.
“The police, quite rightly, want to reassure the public that they can go about their business without fear.
“Through the ongoing Operation Gulf, police in Salford have been cracking down on violent crime in recent years and this intensive work has improved confidence in the police.
“But they cannot work alone. It’s only when members of the community come forward with local knowledge and information, that the police will be able to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
“I am therefore asking anyone with any information about this incident to please come forward and speak to police directly or contact Crimestoppers in complete confidence.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
