Green-fingered Joyce Parker used her life-long love of gardening to great effect to win the annual Flowers in Bloom award from St Vincent’s Housing Association.
Joyce, 92, has lived at Swithins Well Court in Little Hulton for the past two and a half years after downsizing from her bungalow in Yorkshire.
Spotting a series of empty planters, she decided to transform them, with the help of volunteers, into a riot of colour.
She chose an incredible 200 species of flowers to go into the empty pots, from French marigolds to pansies, begonias, petunias, lobelias and dahlias.
Speaking to SalfordOnline.com today she said: “I was surprised to win the award from the association, I think that they have taken pity me on me because of my age!
“I have been gardening all my life and I like to keep active.
“It certainly brightens the gardens up and everbody seems happy with the final result.
“Sadly, I don’t think I will be entering next year because it’s getting too hard for me at my age.
“However, I will be having a drink tonight to celebrate my winning!”
Joyce has two sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren, with much of her family living in Arizona.
