Cadishead Rhinos retain Simon Annis Cup

Match report by Paul Elliott

A nervous start saw the Rhinos put themselves under pressure in front of the large crowd at Lord Street.

Straight from the kick off they failed to field the ball and faced some early pressure from Langworthy Reds.

The Rhinos weathered the storm though with some strong defence and started to make good yards through Matty Taylor and man of the match Connor McKinney.

The nerves faded after seven minutes when some great footwork from Jamie Cain saw him breakthrough and sprint 40 meters to score. Jon Butler added the conversion and the Rhinos led 6-0.

In sweltering conditions the Rhinos started to turn up the heat and they extended their lead on 17 minutes when Darren Evans came off the subs bench and made an immediate impact with a well worked try which Jon Butler converted to extend the Rhinos lead to 12-0.

The Rhinos were starting to look in full control however a blistering 10 minute spell from the visitors saw them score 3 back to back tries as the shell-shocked the Rhinos and raced in to a 16-12 lead.

The Rhinos kept their calm however and Jimmy Crozier found Jon Butler from a scrum move and he squeezed over for a try just before the break leaving the half time score at 16 all.

The second half saw the Rhinos start well with Jason Reed, Duncan Brickhill and Kieran Brady adding some energy in attack and they soon regained the lead when Richie Hayes crashed over for a try which Jon Butler converted.

Cadishead then took advantage of some Langworthy indiscipline as they were awarded a penalty 20 meters out and Jon Butler stepped up to slot over the kick and put some daylight between the sides with the Rhinos leading 24-16.

Langworthy set up a tense finish when on 77 minutes they scored following some good passing play leaving the Rhinos only 2 points ahead.

From the kick off Cadishead went long however the Reds knew they needed to score to win the game and kept the ball alive. On fourth tackle the spread the ball wide where to the delight of the Cadishead crowd Matty Lee intercepted the ball and raced 60 meters to score. He then stepped up and kicked the conversion which sealed the win.

Well done to everyone that pulled on a Rhinos shirt and to all our supporters who turned up in great numbers. Also a special thanks to Langworthy who were gracious in defeat and as a tremendous gesture donated £120 from the subs to help the fundraising!
