A man who escaped from prison in Buckinghamshire last week has been found holed up in a house in Manchester, police report this afternoon.
A nationwide manhunt was launched for John Rooney, 47, who walked out of HMP Springhill, a Category D open prison in Aylesbury, on Tuesday 23 August.
It emerged Rooney had been jailed for a total of 27 years for a series of violent offences, including kidnap, aggravated burglary and threatening to shoot his victims.
He was jailed for 20 years in May 2003 after a series of 23 violent robberies carried out to feed his crack cocaine and heroin habit.
The crime spree came to an end in a five-hour armed siege in Scarborough.
In November 2003 Rooney was sentenced to another four years in prison for robbery, kidnap and false imprisonment committed in the Manchester area, with 20 further offences of robbery and burglary also taken into consideration.
The public were told not to approach the 47-year-old but instead call 999 immediately, as he was considered to pose a significant risk to the general public.
Greater Manchester Police report that Rooney was arrested in south Manchester last night, Monday 31 August.
He has now been remanded into police custody.
A 23-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of harbouring an offender. She remains in custody for questioning.
